Stump grinding is the fastest and most effective way to remove a tree stump no matter what the size. Most tree removal estimates will include a separate price for grinding the stump. Here are a few reasons to consider having the stump ground.

Why Grind The Stump?

What is Tree Cabling?

Tree cabling, also known as tree bracing, is the installation of flexible, steel strand cables to stabilize the tree and reduce stress damage from high winds and the heavy weight of snow, ice or foliage. The cables work to improve the tree’s longevity by strengthening weak branches or limbs so they are able to withstand severe weather.

During the winter months, shrubs and trees enter what is known as the dormant state. This is when deciduous trees and plants take a “rest” until the warm spring temperatures gently wake them to promote new growth.

Before the winter sets in, it’s a good idea to carry out some winter pruning. There are a number of benefits to doing this.

Once the leaves have dropped from your trees, it’s easier to see the entire structure of your trees and identify any problems that may have been missed when the tree was in full leaf. Thank you Shauna!

You made this the largest one-day volunteer event in the tree industry! On September 18th, 2019 we had over 3,800 volunteers donate their talents and services to the caring of trees at 66 veteran properties. This translates to over $3.8 million in donated services. Watch the 2019 Tribute Video.

The mission of this event is to provide arboriculture services to those spaces dedicated to the remembrance of our Veterans of the United States of America. It also allows arborists an opportunity to come together and work on something bigger than themselves or their individual company.

How to Protect Your Plants From Cold Weather and Frost

Winter is the time of year when we like to curl up in a warm environment. The same can be said for your tender outdoor plants.

While many garden plants are hardy enough to survive the coldest of cold snaps, some are more vulnerable and need a little extra help. A hard frost can cause severe damage to these plants and shrubs and can even kill them completely. Excess rain can also cause rot and harsh winter winds can cause damage to foliage.

The good news is that there are many things you can do to ensure your plants stay safe, dry and warm during the winter months and are ready to flourish when spring finally comes back around.

4 Things You Can Do

Bring Tender Plants Indoors

If you have plants in containers, these can be moved inside to protect them during the winter. A greenhouse or a cool porch are great locations and will protect your most vulnerable plants from wind, rain, frost, and snow. Lemon verbena, pelargoniums, and fuchsias are just some of the plants that are most vulnerable to frost.

Pack Up Your Shrubs

Some half-hardy shrubs can suffer severely from frost damage. Wrapping your shrubs in a fleece jacket and packing it with straw is a great way to protect them. If you have large exotics such as cordylines in your garden, we recommend tying up the leaves during the winter months to prevent wind damage and to stop water from pooling at the bottom of the plant and causing the base to rot.

Protect With Mulch

If you have plants that grow from shallow tubers or rhizomes, adding mulch can prevent them from becoming waterlogged and suffering frost damage. Apply a deep layer of mulch around the base of plants such as dahlias and cannas to provide protection to these delicate areas.

Elevate Your Pots

If you have some pots that you can’t move inside or you simply don’t have the space to store them, you can lift them from the ground to prevent water-logging. Specially designed pot feet are available, but wine corks will do the job equally as well. Wrap plants like lavender in horticultural fleece or a hessian cloth to prevent frost and root damage.

There are tricks to getting a fire burning just right, and once you know the basics and a few scientific principles, you’ll be lighting every fire with confidence and keeping it going right through the day or night.

Air

Air, or more specifically oxygen, plays a very important part in the fire lighting and burning process. When lighting a wood stove, ensure the draught control is fully open. When lighting a fireplace or fire pit, ensure there are air gaps between logs and blow on the kindling as you ignite it. You can use a blowpipe or a set of bellows to really get the air flow going.

But Not Too Much Air

While air is great for starting a fire, high winds can play havoc with a fire pit. To avoid burning embers from being blown out of the fire bowl, select a location that offers some protection from the wind.

The Clean Start

It’s always important to inspect your wood stove, fireplace or fire pit is free from any soot, ash or debris before you start a fire. This will help to ensure that heat is distributed evenly and that less acrid smoke is produced.

Different Types of Wood Produce Different Levels of Heat

Softwoods might be cheaper to buy, but hardwoods produce more heat. However, softwood is perfect to use at the start and end of winter when temperatures are not so harsh. You can also mix things up a little by adding a hardwood log to extend the softwood burn.

Why a Top-Down Wood Stove Fire is Better

While air is great for starting a fire, high winds can play havoc with a fire pit. To avoid burning Traditionally, fires are lit from the bottom-up. However, lighting a wood stove fire from the top-down is infinitely better. Using seasoned wood is essential. Stack larger logs on the bottom and build up with progressively smaller logs, then kindling and then finally, newspaper on top. Light the newspaper and let the fire slowly burn down to the larger logs below. The end result is a longer and cleaner fire.

Always Use More Than One Log

When lighting a fire, always use two or three logs at a time - one will often die out quite quickly. A log burns in three stages, and one log will not keep the process going on its own. Adding more logs gives the fire more surfaces to spread to, creates more turbulence and keeps the burn going to longer.
