You can tell if wood is seasoned by checking the ends of each log. If they are splitting and cracking at the end and bark is loosened, they are ready to use in your fireplace or wood stove immediately. Look for hardwood (oak, maple, cherry) that has been cut and stored for at least six months. This type of wood burns slower and gives off more heat than newly split wood. It also produces less smoke and pollutants than its green counterparts.

Though street-side and online ads can be tempting, it’s always wise to inspect firewood before purchasing, especially if you are buying in bulk and stocking up for the winter - use a company that performs regular moisture testing, like ArborTech! First and foremost, Mother Nature can be one tough cookie. If you’re storing your wood outside, you will need to protect it from the elements as well as bugs and animals that might find shelter in your log pile.

To protect your wood outside, use a specially constructed firewood rack, a weatherproof firewood cover or a combination of the two. Racks keep your wood away from moisture on the ground and a cover will protect your wood from the elements and prevent a variety of wildlife from making a home in or a meal of your wood. Indoors, you should keep a good supply of firewood next to, but not too close to, your fireplace or woodstove.

The Best Firewood Delivered to Your Door

At ArborTech, our New England Blend of firewood is seasoned and we will deliver it to your door. If you have ever been forced to use green firewood to light a fire, you’ll know it’s a frustrating experience! Not only is it devilishly difficult to light and burn, but you’ll also be faced with an endless barrage of pops, cracks and sizzles together with thick clouds of acrid smoke. Not the best way to warm your home in the winter and the smoke produced can be a health hazard for you and your family!

Fortunately, spotting green firewood is quite easy. The wood will feel heavy and the bark will be firmly attached. The ends of the wood will also have a light color and feel damp.

ArborTech Tree Services has exceptional firewood for sale to burn in your wood stove, fireplace or outside fire pit. When purchasing firewood, you should take the following into account to ensure a great burning experience:

Moisture Content – properly seasoned firewood has a moisture content below 20%

Cleanliness of wood

Length desired for your burning apparatus

ArborTech’s seasoned firewood has a low moisture content (<20%). Burning wood with a high moisture content can cause buildup of creosote in chimneys and pipes, which increases the risk of chimney fires. Our firewood is screened twice, once when split and once before it is delivered, and we stock 4 different lengths:

10-12”

12-14”

14-16”

16-18” (most popular)

ArborTech is proud of the seasoned firewood that we sell. When a load leaves our yard, we are confident that you are getting quality wood, at a reasonable price, with the best customer service in the area. The firewood that we burn in our homes comes from the same piles that we sell to our customers. There’s no private stock here at ArborTech; just quality, truly seasoned firewood that will keep you and your family warm this winter.

Some Benefits of burning firewood:

Cut energy costs

Energy independence

Eco-friendly heating

Ambiance

Warmth when the power goes out

Fire for cooking

Heating a home with firewood has always been a great alternative to standard fuel sources. As New Englanders, burning firewood is part of our culture; after all we’ve done it for over 350 years!

In the past year, New England homeowners have benefited from the drop in price for heating oil and gas, however the market price for fossil fuels can be as unpredictable as the weather. Firewood, on the other hand, remains an all-natural, renewable resource for heat which keeps the price competitive and affordable.

When choosing a supplier for your oil or gas the most decisive factor is price, since quality is typically the same (the fuel burns consistently). When choosing a supplier for firewood, quality (then price) should be the most important factor. You should take into account wood cleanliness, cut length, and most importantly moisture content, all of which can severely affect the burning experience.

Wood quality is the most important factor to consider when heating with firewood.

With so many factors affecting firewood quality, whom should you trust as your firewood supplier? Is it the company waiving the delivery charge or saving you $50 on a cord of wood?

New England is currently experiencing a shortage of seasoned firewood. Last winter’s frigid temperatures resulted in many companies selling out of seasoned firewood. To keep up with customer demands, some companies began selling wood that was set aside for the 2015/2016 burning season thus leaving them with minimal seasoned wood for this year. Reputable companies may cap the number of cords that you can buy in an effort to manage the supply to satisfy other customer orders. They will also let you know when they are out of seasoned wood.

It’s rather unfortunate that when demand exceeds supply, consumers are sometimes taken advantage of. Unreputable suppliers who sold their seasoned wood in the spring have a history of selling semi-seasoned firewood as “seasoned” in the fall. This “seasoned” wood is hard to light and tends to sizzle and smoke.

A reputable firewood supplier keeps their stored wood away from dirt and mud to limit surface contaminates. All pieces should be to a uniform length for a consistent, even burn in your stove. Companies that deliver should be insured and the drivers D.O.T. compliant. Your supplier should also be able to let you know the moisture content of their inventory, which should be 20% or lower for seasoned wood (semi-seasoned wood’s moisture content is between 30-40%, which is too damp for burning).

True seasoned firewood should have no more than 20% moisture content when tested with a moisture meter as shown above.

Quality seasoned firewood is more than just a price point; it’s about the overall buying and burning experience. Being able to heat your home effortlessly is priceless and doing so at a reasonable price is what ArborTech’s goal is. We’re proud of the firewood that we sell to our clients. When a load leaves our yard, we’re confident that you are getting quality wood at a reasonable price with the best customer service in the area.
As homeowners crank up the heat, local companies that sell firewood are getting slammed with calls for deliveries.

Firewood is still a big business in western Massachusetts and it can be costly for consumers.

“We’re moving a lot of wood right now. The temperatures are helping us and it’s a good time to get prepared and to have that wood inside and stacked and and ready for when you need it,” said Randy Sample, owner of Arbortech Tree Services.

Sample said that calls for firewood this week are definitely heating up. With prices for a cord of wood in the area ranging from about $200 to $300, he admitted that it can be difficult for customers to know exactly what they’re paying for.

Is it fresh cut wood, what you don’t want? Or it sufficiently seasoned?

When choosing a supplier for your oil or gas the most decisive factor is price, since quality is typically the same (the fuel burns consistently). When choosing a supplier for firewood, quality (then price) should be the most important factor. You should take into account the following: cleanliness of wood, length and most importantly moisture content, all of which can severely affect your burning experience.

A reputable firewood supplier keeps their firewood stored away from dirt and mud to limit surface contaminates. All pieces should be a uniform length for a consistent, even burn in your stove. Companies that deliver firewood should be insured and the drivers D.O.T. compliant. Your supplier should also be able to tell you the moisture content of their inventory, which should be 20% or lower for seasoned wood (semi-seasoned wood’s moisture content is between 30-40%, which is too damp for burning).

With so many factors affecting the quality of firewood, whom should you trust as your firewood supplier? Is it the company waiving the delivery charge or saving you $50 on a cord of wood?

Begin by planning ahead…order your firewood before the cold weather arrives to avoid a price increase or purchasing wood that is not truly seasoned. To keep up with customer demands, some companies sell wood that is set aside for the next burning season. This “seasoned” firewood is difficult to light and tends to sizzle and smoke.

Reputable companies have a consistent price point and let you know when they are sold-out of seasoned firewood, but unfortunately consumers are sometimes taken advantage of when demand exceeds supply.
